Can Europe be saved?

In der neuesten Ausgabe unserer Reihe Nobel Opinions (auf Englisch) kritisiert Nobelpreisträger Paul Krugman die Kurzsichtigkeit politischer und wirtschaftlicher Entscheidungen und hebt die Rolle von Medien und politischen Strukturen bei der Polarisierung hervor – wie etwa die unzureichende Transparenz rund um Trump und die übermässige Kritik an Clinton im Jahr 2016. Krugman warnt vor einem erstarkenden Nationalismus, insbesondere in Europa, und plädiert für stärkeren sozialen Ausgleich bei handelsbezogenen Problemen. Da tiefe Zinssätze die Möglichkeiten zur Krisenbewältigung einschränken, spricht er sich für eine lockere Geldpolitik und verstärkte fiskalische Anreize aus. Die US-Wahlen 2024, bei denen Donald Trump erneut ins Amt gewählt wurde, bestätigen Krugmans Warnungen vor Medieneinfluss und Nationalismus. Seine Einschätzungen zu politischen Massnahmen und sozialen Unterstützungssystemen sind aktueller denn je.
